European Parliamentarians critical of nano-regulation

The European Parliament is currently discussing a very critical draft report on regulatory aspects of nanomaterials, by rapporteur Carl Schlyter of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.

The report calls for a clear regulatory framework for nanomaterials and is highly critical of the current activities deployed by the European Commission in collecting adequate information, risk assessment and regulation of nanomaterials. It also includes calls for labelling consumer products including nanomaterials, the development of adequate testing procedures, limiting patent rights and development of ethical guidelines for nanotechnology in biomedical applications.
